Slovak President receives petition to lift sanctions against Russia

Activists from the civic association “Brother for Brother” have submitted a petition to the President of Slovakia calling for a referendum to lift sanctions against Russia. The petition gathered over 450,000 signatures, significantly exceeding the required 350,000 for holding a referendum.

The chairman of the association, Matúš Aleksa, emphasized that Slovaks are not interested in political games but want to see reasonable prices for raw materials and the restoration of trade as it was before. He also thanked the citizens who signed the petition.

The activists cited economic problems, the impact of sanctions, and the ban on Russian culture as the main reasons for launching the petition. They believe these sanctions are harming Slovakia. According to Slovak law, a minimum of 350,000 signatures is required to hold a referendum.

Earlier in December 2024, it was reported that over 361,000 people had signed the petition. In February of this year, the signature collection was completed, as activists gathered more signatures than needed. The next step will be the official verification of the signatures, after which a decision will be made about holding the referendum.
