Austria suspends family reunification for asylum seekers

The new Austrian government, led by Chancellor Christian Stöcker, has decided to temporarily suspend the family reunification process for asylum seekers as of March 12.

According to Reuters, the three-party coalition stated that the decision is related to the European Union’s emergency provisions concerning national security. The temporary measure aims to suspend all rights for family members of individuals granted asylum in Austria.

According to the government, 18,000 people arrived in Austria in 2023 and 2024 under family reunification, including 13,000 schoolchildren and minors.
