Extreme heat that settled in France during the summer of 2024 may have caused the premature deaths of around 3,700 people, mostly elderly.
This is reported by BFMTV, citing data from the French Public Health Agency. According to their estimates, high temperatures were a significant factor in the deaths of 3,700 individuals, three-quarters of whom were over 75 years old. Elderly people also made up the majority of those hospitalized due to the heat, as well as 24% of those who sought advice on the “hotline.”
Despite the severe impact, the summer of 2024 proved to be less deadly than 2023, when the heat contributed to the deaths of 5,167 people. Overall, more than 47,000 people across Europe lost their lives to high temperatures in 2023.
