Volkswagen considers producing military vehicles for Germany

Automaker Volkswagen may repurpose part of its production for manufacturing military equipment for the German army. This move is linked to both Europe’s rearmament efforts and the decline in car sales, The Telegraph reports.

Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume stated that the company has not yet received specific proposals but is open to exploring potential concepts.

According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, car sales in the EU have been declining since 2019. Amid this trend, some German automotive plants have already begun shifting to arms production. Sander Tordoir, chief economist at the Centre for European Reform, noted that military production could become a new business direction for automakers.

Previously, the U.S. imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, where Volkswagen also has manufacturing operations. These changes may influence the company’s strategic decisions in the coming years.
