80,000 euros missing from Berlin police headquarters, investigation underway

The Berlin police are investigating the disappearance of 80,000 euros in cash from their headquarters, which had been seized as part of an ongoing investigation.

The nearly 80,000 euros were confiscated in connection with an undisclosed inheritance case and had been stored in a safe at the police building on Friesenstraße in the Berlin-Kreuzberg district. According to available information, the money was meant to be stored for a different case, but it was during this process that the large sum was discovered to be missing.

In response to the incident, an internal investigation has been initiated. On Wednesday, March 12, forensic experts were already on-site gathering evidence.

Berlin police spokesperson Florian Nath confirmed the cash disappearance when questioned by Bild. He did not rule out the possibility that the money had been accidentally misplaced and might still be found during the investigation.

“It would be unfair to suspect colleagues at this stage. We are at the very beginning of our investigation, which is being conducted very thoroughly,” he added.
