Hungary confirms upcoming visit of Israeli PM despite ICC arrest warrant

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to visit Hungary in the coming weeks, according to Gergely Gulyás, chief of staff to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

Orbán extended the invitation to Netanyahu last November, assuring him that Hungary would not enforce the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant issued against him.

“Once the date of the visit is set, we will announce it—of course, taking into account security aspects, which are very important in this case,” Gulyás said.

When asked whether Hungary is considering withdrawing from the ICC, Gulyás responded:
“I have already expressed my opinion that I would strongly support leaving. The government has not yet made such a decision. The organization has lost its purpose, acting politically rather than legally.”

Recently, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó indicated that Budapest is reviewing its cooperation with the ICC, following U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order imposing sanctions against the court.

As previously reported, on February 6, Trump signed an executive order sanctioning the ICC, citing its arrest warrant against top Israeli officials as a key reason.
