The upper house of the Swiss Parliament has backed a proposal aimed at tightening border controls to curb illegal immigration.
Reuters reported on the proposal, which has already been approved by the lower house. The plan urges the government to increase border controls in both the short and medium terms, and to more aggressively deport individuals without valid residence permits who fail to apply for asylum.
While the document calls for enhanced actions, it stresses the importance of considering measures taken by neighboring countries. It also warns against “systematic checks” on everyone entering Switzerland, highlighting the potential economic harm such actions could cause.
The proposal has been forwarded to the federal cabinet, which is now expected to draft the necessary legislation.
Meanwhile, discussions have intensified in Germany regarding a review of migration policy, citing a rise in violent crimes involving migrants.
