On April 9, the Czech police will conduct a nationwide operation aimed at monitoring speed limits during their annual Speed Marathon.
Drivers are advised to refrain from speeding, as violators could face fines. The event will focus on pre-selected locations, but the public still has time to influence where patrols will be stationed by submitting suggestions and voting. Interest in the event is high this year.
“Do you know any risky spots? Do you know areas where drivers often break the rules? Help complete the list of locations where, on April 9, police officers will monitor traffic safety and smooth traffic flow. The main goal of these preventive activities is to reduce accidents and improve road safety,” the police encourage citizens to participate in the Speed Marathon on their official website.
“As of March 3, more than 9,300 reports have been posted, gathering over 47,000 votes,” said police spokeswoman Violeta Sirisova in a statement to Aktuálně.cz. “At this point, we can confidently say that the number of votes is higher than last year, when we received over 20,000 votes and selected 4,000 locations,” she added.
The public still has until March 18 to submit location suggestions and vote for those already listed on the Safe Routes portal.
So far, residents of Prague and nearby areas have suggested 1,168 potential speed-check locations. It will be clear next week which of these suggestions will be selected, alongside previously chosen sites. Based on past years, around 1,000 locations are expected.
The speed checks will occur on Wednesday, April 9, and will also address other traffic violations. In previous years, police uncovered a range of offenses, including 157 instances of vehicles in poor technical condition.
The Speed Marathon event has been held annually for several years. In the 2024 campaign, police inspected about 4,700 vehicles at 10,000 locations, resulting in 2,166 traffic violations, including 1,578 speeding offenses. The total fines collected on that day amounted to 3,555,200 CZK.
