French MEP calls on the US to return the Statue of Liberty

French Member of the European Parliament Raphaël Glucksmann has suggested that the US return the Statue of Liberty, which was gifted by France in the 19th century, France 24 reports.

At a congress of his movement, the center-left politician sharply criticized the US, claiming that Americans have “taken the side of tyrants” and “fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom.”

We will tell the Americans: give us back the Statue of Liberty. We gave it to you, but it seems that you despise it. So here, at home, it will be just fine, Glucksmann declared.

The Statue of Liberty, designed by French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, was unveiled in New York Harbor in 1886 to commemorate the centenary of the American Declaration of Independence. This symbol of democracy and freedom has since become one of the most recognizable landmarks in the United States.
