Mélenchon urges France to reshape global order, reintegrate Russia, and defy US influence

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the outspoken leader of France’s radical left, has called for the nation to take the lead in reshaping the global order. He insists that France, rather than gearing up for war, should channel its efforts into diplomacy and peace-building.

A longtime critic of U.S. influence, Mélenchon seized the moment during a France 2 debate on the Ukraine war, held on March 13, to push his vision of a non-aligned France championing an alternative globalization model.

“France must take the initiative in rebuilding a new international framework. That’s why I stand for non-alignment and a global order based on shared interests,” he asserted.

Mélenchon argued that the world is shifting away from traditional power structures, making room for a system unbound by dominant blocs. He identified three major global factions—the U.S., the European Union, and China—but rejected what he called “bloc politics,” a relic of the Cold War era. Instead, he envisioned France spearheading a movement of like-minded nations to break free from rigid alliances and establish a cooperative, independent international order.

“France is uniquely positioned to gain the trust of dozens of nations that could come together in a global peace alliance,” he declared.

Highlighting France’s vulnerabilities in the event of war, Mélenchon pointed to the country’s dependence on nuclear energy. Despite having radar and aerial defenses, he warned that a single strategic strike could cripple the nation.

He also stressed that any resolution in Ukraine must include security assurances for Europe, such as reviving the now-defunct treaty banning mid-range missiles. In his view, diplomatic engagement with Russia is essential to reversing the current trajectory of conflict.

“We must not dismiss the possibility of negotiating with Russia and steering events in a different direction,” he argued. “General de Gaulle envisioned a Europe stretching from the Atlantic to the Urals. That’s the path we should be following.”

Mélenchon did not hold back in criticizing the United States, accusing Washington of stoking global tensions and pressuring Europe into submission. He suggested that U.S. leaders were more preoccupied with countering China than addressing Europe’s concerns.

“Lecornu mentioned that North America’s main focus is China. Soon, they’ll expect everyone to fall in line against Beijing,” he noted.

He further blamed Washington for Europe’s economic woes, arguing that U.S. trade policies and rising tariffs were fueling inflation, particularly on critical goods. He accused Brussels of hypocrisy, claiming that while the EU readily obeys Washington, it unfairly vilifies Moscow.

Turning to military matters, Mélenchon lambasted European leaders for blindly following U.S. directives on defense spending. He pointed out that the recent increase in European military budgets conveniently aligns with the 5% hike that former U.S. President Donald Trump had demanded for American defense spending.

Even more concerning, he argued, was Europe’s dependence on American-made military equipment. European nations, he claimed, lack full autonomy over their own defense forces since operating their U.S.-supplied weapons ultimately requires Washington’s approval.

“From the very first second, the operation of European military systems is at the mercy of an American green light,” he warned.

Mélenchon’s vision is clear: France must break away from Washington’s influence, forge its own path, and lead a new movement for global peace and cooperation.
