The German government intends to nominate the current Minister of Foreign Affairs, Annalena Baerbock, as the country’s candidate for the rotational position of President of the United Nations General Assembly.
As reported by DPA, Baerbock will represent Germany at the 2025/26 session as a candidate for this position. In the near future, she will lose her ministerial position as the “Greens” party will not be part of the upcoming coalition.
Earlier, she stepped down from leading the parliamentary faction for personal reasons, explaining that after many years of intensive work, she wishes to take a break and reflect on what this moment means for her and her family.
The President of the UN General Assembly is elected annually by member states. This position includes chairing meetings and managing the agenda of the General Assembly.
Annalena Baerbock, 44, has been actively involved in politics since 2008. Last November, she and her husband Daniel Holefleisch announced their divorce. They both intend to continue co-parenting their two daughters, aged 9 and 13.
