Latvia is set to close three pedestrian border checkpoints with Russia and Belarus, following a proposal from the State Border Guard (SBG). The checkpoints in question are “Paternieki” in the Kraslava region, and “Grebenovo” and “Terekhovo” in the Ludza region.
Starting March 19, these border points will be accessible only to motor vehicles, as part of measures to “strengthen border security and enhance the effectiveness of border control.”
The restrictions, however, do not specify an end date.
The Ministry of the Interior’s project notes that the decision is a response to the ongoing geopolitical tensions stemming from Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. “The war unleashed by Russia and openly supported by Belarus against Ukraine is seen as a risk factor and a possible motivation for Russia and Belarus to continue efforts to destabilize the situation at the Latvian border,” the Ministry of the Interior emphasized.
The government is expected to review the Ministry’s proposal on Tuesday, March 18.
