The Italian publication Il Foglio has become the first newspaper in the world to release an issue entirely created by artificial intelligence, The Guardian reports.
Il Foglio’s editor-in-chief, Claudio Cerasa, explained that the project is part of a month-long journalistic experiment aimed at demonstrating the impact of AI on modern newsrooms.
A special four-page edition, titled Il Foglio AI, was made available in kiosks and on the newspaper’s website on March 18. All articles, headlines, and quotes were generated by AI, while journalists were only responsible for asking questions and analyzing the responses.
The front page of the issue features an article about Donald Trump, discussing the “paradox of Italian Trumpists”—those who oppose “cancel culture” yet either ignore or even support the authoritarian behavior of the former U.S. president. Other articles in the issue explore modern relationship trends among European youth and include AI-generated letters to the editor.
The Il Foglio experiment comes amid growing global attention to artificial intelligence. In February, the European Commission launched the InvestAI initiative, aimed at attracting €200 billion in investments for AI development.
