Austria to ban cell phones in schools until eighth grade

Starting May 1, Austria will enforce a ban on the use of mobile phones in schools for students from first to eighth grade. This was announced by Minister of Education Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS party).

From May 1, mobile phones will be prohibited both during lessons and breaks for students up to and including the eighth grade, the minister stated.

The ban applies to primary, secondary, special schools, and grammar schools. However, schools will have the flexibility to make exceptions if mobile phone use is necessary for educational purposes.
