Migrant dies crossing English Channel

One person has died following the capsizing of a migrant boat in the English Channel, Reuters reports, citing French authorities.

The incident occurred on the night of March 20, when a boat traveling from France to the UK was involved in an accident. French rescuers managed to pull 15 people from the water and brought them to the port of Gravelines, near Dunkirk.

Since the beginning of 2024, at least 77 migrants have died attempting to cross the Channel— the highest number since 2018, according to officials.

Meanwhile, the UK government is discussing the possibility of introducing criminal liability for “endangering life at sea” as part of efforts to combat illegal migration across the Channel.

On February 10, British and French rescuers assisted around 230 migrants, but two people were found dead on the shore.
