Canada’s new PM to call early elections on April 28

Canada’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Mark Carney, is expected to announce snap elections on Sunday, March 23, with voting set for April 28, according to government sources cited by AFP.

One source stated: “It is expected that on Sunday, the Prime Minister will announce elections for April 28.” Another source confirmed the planned date for the early elections.

This will be Carney’s first electoral campaign since taking over as Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party last week, following Justin Trudeau’s departure. Notably, Carney has never held an elected office before.

Over the past year, the Conservative Party has led in public opinion polls. However, as the Liberals regain support amid the trade tensions initiated by U.S. President Donald Trump, Carney is looking to leverage the party’s recent momentum by calling an early election.
