Fire at power substation near Heathrow triggers major airport shutdown

A massive fire at a power substation near Heathrow Airport led to a full suspension of operations on Friday, March 21, as a widespread power outage affected the area.

The airport administration announced that Heathrow would remain closed until the end of the day and advised travelers to avoid the airport.

“We do not have clear information on when power supply will be fully restored. To ensure the safety of passengers and staff, we are forced to close Heathrow until the end of the day,” the statement read.

According to Sky News, the fire ignited around midnight in the Hayes area, roughly 2.4 km from the airport. Firefighters from the London Fire Brigade responded to the scene.

The incident not only disrupted the airport but also impacted nearby areas, prompting the evacuation of about 150 people and the establishment of a 200-meter safety perimeter. Eyewitnesses posted dramatic photos and videos online, capturing towering flames and thick black smoke billowing from the site.
