Man in UK sentenced to 37 years in prison for plotting attack on airbase

29-year-old Mohammad Farouk was sentenced to 37 years in prison for planning an attack on a Royal Air Force base in northern England using a homemade bomb. The court found him guilty of preparing terrorist acts and storing explosives.

Farouk, inspired by the terrorist group ISIS, radicalized himself online. In January 2023, he was arrested at a hospital where he worked as a nursing student, in possession of a homemade bomb containing nearly 10 kg of explosives taken from fireworks.

Initially, his target was the Royal Air Force base Menwith Hill in North Yorkshire, which is also used by the U.S. military. However, realizing that it would be impossible to breach the base’s perimeter, he decided to target a more vulnerable objective.

The judge sentenced Farouk to 37 years in prison without the possibility of parole. In February 2025, a court in Thuringia, Germany, sentenced two Afghan nationals, who had planned a terrorist attack against the Swedish Parliament, to prison.
