Minister in Iceland resigns over confession of having an affair with a minor 36 years ago

Iceland’s Minister for Children, Ásthildur Loa Þórsdóttir, has decided to resign after disclosing that she gave birth to a child fathered by a teenager over three decades ago.

According to BBC, Þórsdóttir admitted to Icelandic media that, at the age of 22, she began a relationship with a 15-year-old boy who joined a religious community where she worked. A year later, the couple welcomed a child.

Recently, it was revealed that the child’s father had repeatedly requested access to their child, but Þórsdóttir denied his requests and sought child support for 18 years while the child was a minor.

Last week, a relative of the man informed Iceland’s Prime Minister, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, about Þórsdóttir’s long-hidden relationship. After confirming this information, the Prime Minister summoned Þórsdóttir and asked her to step down from her position.

It is worth noting that the age of consent in Iceland is 15, but sexual relations with a minor are prohibited if the partner is a teacher or mentor, or if the minor is financially dependent on the adult.
