Poland will suspend asylum rights for migrants arriving through Belarus

Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced that a decision to suspend asylum rights for migrants crossing the Polish border from Belarus will soon take effect.

According to Politico, Tusk stated that this decision was approved by the Polish parliament and will soon be signed by President Andrzej Duda. The law, which was announced in October 2024, grants the Polish government the authority to suspend the registration of asylum applications in certain border areas for up to 60 days, with the possibility of extension upon agreement with the parliament.

Exceptions will be made for vulnerable groups, such as unaccompanied minors and pregnant women. The suspension of asylum is the latest phase of Poland’s strict migration policy aimed at countering hybrid pressure from Belarus.
