Steven Witkoff: Ukraine’s elections, NATO rejection and the chance for a truce with Russia

In an interview with journalist Tucker Carlson, U.S. Special Envoy Steven Witkoff made several key statements about the current situation in Ukraine and the possible end of the conflict.

Elections in Ukraine
Witkoff confirmed that elections will take place in Ukraine, as agreed upon by the Ukrainian authorities. He emphasized that President Zelensky, despite the difficult situation, must understand the need to work towards reaching a peace agreement with Russia. Witkoff stressed that this process must take place before the final peace treaty is signed.

Ukraine and NATO
The U.S. special envoy also noted that both President Zelensky and his aide, Yermak, acknowledged that Ukraine is unlikely to become a NATO member. The issue of providing Ukraine with security guarantees, similar to NATO’s Article 5, remains open for discussion. This could become an important point of negotiation with Russia, provided that territorial integrity issues of Ukraine are resolved.

Ceasefire and Security
According to Witkoff, the U.S. has made significant progress in negotiations with Russia, and there is a possibility of a ceasefire in the Black Sea as early as next week. He also stressed that the U.S. cannot indefinitely support Ukraine financially, fearing that the situation could lead to the use of nuclear weapons.

Possible meeting between Putin and Trump
Additionally, Witkoff stated that a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump could take place in the coming months.
