The Netherlands has updated its travel advice for LGBTQ+ individuals visiting the United States, citing concerns over shifting policies affecting sexual minorities. The move follows similar actions taken by Germany and Finland, with Belgium also planning to revise its guidance.
The Dutch foreign ministry’s travel advisory now warns that “laws and customs in the US towards LGBTQI+ people may differ from those in the Netherlands.” Previously, the advisory stated that American laws were “comparable” to the Netherlands’ progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights, Dutch public broadcaster NOS reported.
Belgium is also working on updating its travel guidance due to stricter U.S. border controls and evolving policies on transgender and LGBTQ+ rights, according to Flemish broadcaster VRT.
The German and Finnish governments had already adjusted their warnings after former U.S. President Donald Trump removed some protections for sexual minorities, including limiting gender identification on passports and visas to only male or female.
