Drivers across Europe face unified driving bans

The European Union has agreed on new, stricter measures against traffic violators. If a driver seriously violates traffic rules in one EU country, they could be banned from driving throughout Europe.

This also applies to cases where the driver holds a license issued by another EU country.

Currently, the rule allows a country that did not issue the driver’s license to only impose a driving ban within its own territory. The new law proposes that the country that issued the license will be obligated to recognize and enforce the ban if it is imposed by another EU member state.

The new rule will mainly apply to serious offenses, such as driving under the influence or causing fatal accidents. For the ban to be valid across Europe, the country where the ban was imposed must have enforced a driving pause of at least three months, and all appeals must have been exhausted.

The agreement between the European Parliament and EU member states is still preliminary—it is yet to be formally approved. The exact timing of this approval remains unclear.
