Europe has no alternative to US nuclear umbrella – NATO Secretary General Rutte

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has stated that Europe remains dependent on the nuclear deterrence provided by the United States and has no alternative to this security mechanism.

Speaking at a meeting at the School of Economics in Warsaw, he emphasized that American guarantees are a key element of European security.

Rutte’s statement comes amid ongoing discussions about the future of the European Union’s defense policy. In recent years, some European politicians, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have raised the issue of strengthening European strategic autonomy, including the potential expansion of its own nuclear capabilities. However, most EU countries continue to view US nuclear deterrence as a fundamental pillar of their security.

Rutte’s remarks also come against the backdrop of growing international tensions. The war in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East are prompting European countries to reassess their defense strategies.
