The German government has rejected calls to boycott American goods despite the threat of increased tariffs from Donald Trump’s administration. Berlin emphasizes the importance of maintaining strong trade relations with the United States, Reuters reports.
Government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit stated on Wednesday that Germany is committed to constructive relations with the U.S., including trade cooperation.
We are interested in good relations and the development of mutually beneficial trade ties with the United States. We are doing everything possible to achieve this. We do not need additional trade barriers – on the contrary, we need to reduce them. In this regard, we do not support initiatives related to a boycott, Hebestreit emphasized.
The German Association of Importers and Exporters (BGA) also warned against such measures, calling a boycott a “misguided response” to political disagreements between Berlin and Washington.
Trade and security tensions between the U.S. and its European allies have fueled growing calls within the EU to replace American products with locally manufactured goods.
According to recent polls, a majority of French citizens are considering boycotting American brands as a protest against the economic policies of the new U.S. administration.
