Hungary’s foreign minister heads to Moscow for peace talks and economic ties

Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó is doubling down on diplomacy, flying to Moscow to discuss peace efforts and economic cooperation.

Posting on Facebook before his departure, Szijjártó remarked on the early start, saying, “At a quarter to three, even the roosters are rubbing their eyes, but we have to leave because the sun rises earlier to the east of us… and so do the negotiating partners.”

His visit comes amid ongoing U.S.-Russia peace discussions, which he praised as a step toward greater global security. “We’ve been saying for three years that communication channels must remain open,” he wrote. In Moscow, his focus will be on securing energy supplies, strengthening trade relations, and pushing for diplomatic solutions to conflicts.

Szijjártó also reiterated Hungary’s firm opposition to Ukraine’s EU membership, arguing that other nations, like North Macedonia, are more prepared for accession. His stance aligns with Hungary’s broader skepticism of Ukraine’s rapid integration into European institutions, especially on economic grounds.

As tensions persist in Europe, Hungary continues to carve its own path—prioritizing dialogue with Russia while resisting Brussels’ push to fast-track Ukraine into the EU.
