U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has announced his decision to join his wife, Usha Vance, on her trip to Greenland, a visit that local authorities have called a provocation.
It was previously reported that President Donald Trump’s National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz, will also visit Greenland. The trip comes amid Trump’s statements about his desire to annex the island to the United States.
According to the White House, the Vances plan to visit the U.S. military space base Pituffik in northern Greenland. Vance noted that he will inspect the island’s security system, as Greenland is a strategically important region vulnerable to external threats.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen called the visit by the U.S. delegation “problematic” and emphasized the importance of respecting Greenland’s sovereignty. Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede and Jens-Frederik Nielsen, leader of the Democrats party, also expressed concern, stating that the visit by U.S. officials demonstrates a lack of respect for the island’s people.
President Trump, meanwhile, insists that the visit is friendly in nature and is part of economic and strategic cooperation with Greenland. However, his statement that “Greenland may become part of our future” has heightened tensions between Washington, Copenhagen, and Nuuk.
