The German government is not ruling out countermeasures in response to the new trade tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. On Friday, March 28, a government representative stated that “nothing is off the table” regarding potential retaliatory actions.
According to Reuters, when asked about possible sanctions against American technology companies, the representative noted that “all options remain open and are under consideration.”
He emphasized that final decisions will be made at the European Union level in coordination with the European Commission, taking into account potential economic consequences.
Earlier, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck and the country’s Automotive Industry Association criticized Trump’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on car imports, calling for urgent negotiations.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the EU intends to protect its interests, while Canada’s Prime Minister also pledged to take countermeasures. In response, Trump threatened the EU and Canada with additional tariffs if they coordinated their reaction to his trade policies.
