Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed skepticism about the idea of deploying “guaranteeing forces” in Ukraine, a concept recently proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron.
The suggestion involves placing forces in strategically important areas of Ukraine after the war concludes.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Meloni warned that such a deployment could be perceived by Russian President Vladimir Putin as a provocation. “We need to be cautious. This could be seen more as a threat,” she stated.
Despite this, Meloni reaffirmed her support for extending NATO’s Article 5 to Ukraine, although without the country becoming a full member of the Alliance. She believes this approach would be “simpler and more effective” than other alternatives.
When asked whether she views Russia as a long-term threat, Meloni responded, “Maybe.” However, she emphasized the importance of preparing for any potential threat, adding, “But in any case, I believe we must find a way to be prepared to defend ourselves against any threat that may arise.”
