U.S. President Donald Trump stated that his conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was “extremely productive.” He shared this in his social media platform, Truth Social.
According to Trump, the leaders discussed a wide range of issues and “agree on many aspects.” He also announced a personal meeting with Carney after the upcoming elections in Canada to discuss political and economic initiatives beneficial for both countries.
The conversation took place amid growing tensions in U.S.-Canada relations, exacerbated by Trump’s statements about the possible transformation of Canada into the “51st state” and the introduction of new trade restrictions. However, in his post, Trump did not mention this issue and referred to Carney as the “Prime Minister of Canada,” unlike his predecessor, Justin Trudeau, whom he sometimes called a “governor.”
This week, Trump confirmed his intention to impose a 25% tariff on imported cars and auto parts starting in April to support domestic production in the U.S. He also threatened even stricter measures if the EU and Canada coordinated a response to his trade policies.
For his part, Mark Carney noted that Canada’s relationship with the U.S., traditionally its closest security and trade partner, will no longer be the same.
