Volkswagen may begin production of military vehicles

Volkswagen is in discussions about potential collaboration with Rheinmetall.

Rumors about a possible partnership between the two companies have circulated for some time, and recently, VW CEO Oliver Blume indirectly confirmed them in an interview with the British newspaper The Telegraph:

“If there is an opportunity to move forward in the field of military vehicles, we will consider these concepts.”

The CEO of Rheinmetall, Armin Papperger, recently visited Volkswagen’s plant in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony. He concluded that the factory is “well-suited” for military vehicle production.

Rheinmetall and MAN Truck & Bus, Volkswagen’s truck division, have had a joint venture since 2010. Their project, Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV), already manufactures military vehicles, particularly in Munich and Kassel (Hesse).

According to Bild, Volkswagen may begin producing existing RMMV models in Osnabrück once demand increases from the Bundeswehr and international clients.
