Italian and German law enforcement agencies carried out joint raids against the ‘Ndrangheta mafia clan, arresting dozens of suspects, Tagesschau reports.
The operations took place in Italy and four federal states in Germany: Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Saarland. Hundreds of police officers participated in the raids. According to Italian police, 29 people were arrested, 20 of them in Italy.
In the spring of last year, German authorities reported that around 170 individuals suspected of links to Italian mafia groups were residing in Baden-Württemberg alone.
In February 2024, a large-scale operation against the Cosa Nostra mafia clan was conducted in Sicily, leading to the arrest of more than 180 people. Additionally, in early 2025, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Italy had failed to address the issue of illegal toxic waste disposal by mafia groups in the southern region of Campania.
