Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has expressed concern over the new U.S. tariffs, stating that they will severely impact Italian manufacturers.
Speaking in Rome on April 2 at an awards ceremony for winners of an Italian cuisine competition, Meloni emphasized the need to make every effort to prevent a trade war.
Meanwhile, Minister for European Union Affairs Tommaso Foti cautioned against retaliatory measures, calling for a restrained and balanced approach.
On the same day, Donald Trump announced the introduction of sweeping reciprocal tariffs on goods from the U.S.’s foreign partners. The former president called his tariff plan a “Day of Liberation,” claiming that it would help bring jobs back to America and generate trillions of dollars for the federal budget.
Trump stressed that the new tariffs would affect all countries. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde warned that this move would have a negative impact on the global economy.
