The Jerichower Land district in Saxony-Anhalt has implemented a new rule requiring all schools to raise the German flag every day, following a proposal from the right-wing “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) party.
This decision, passed after a vote in the local parliament, received support from CDU (Christian Democratic Union) lawmakers. The new mandate will affect 15 schools, including eight secondary schools, three grammar schools, three special needs schools, and one vocational school. Primary schools are excluded from the rule, as they fall under municipal jurisdiction.
The explanatory note for the proposal emphasizes addressing “social, economic, and religious contradictions” in society, with the flag being presented as a “symbol of unity.”
While the CDU and AfD have a formal “firewall” agreement preventing cooperation, this vote marks another instance where the CDU has aligned with the AfD in the Jerichower Land district.
