At the NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged alliance members to commit to raising military spending to 5% of GDP. This requirement also applies to the United States itself.
According to Rubio, Washington expects its allies to agree to this step and fulfill their commitments. He also emphasized that the U.S. continues to play an active role in the alliance, despite criticism of NATO from President Donald Trump.
In addition to defense funding issues, the meeting participants will discuss European security, lasting peace in Ukraine, and the threat posed by China. The discussions will also cover plans for the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague, scheduled for this summer.
