EU prepares response to Trump’s tariffs: countermeasures could reach $28 billion

European Union countries may approve the first package of countermeasures in the coming days in response to tariffs imposed by the United States.

According to Reuters, the European Commission is preparing a list of American goods that could face retaliatory duties totaling up to $28 billion.

The list includes U.S. products such as meat, grains, wine, timber, clothing, as well as chewing gum, dental floss, vacuum cleaners, and even toilet paper. Such a move would mean that the EU joins China and Canada in imposing retaliatory tariffs on the United States, the report notes.

In addition, on Monday, Luxembourg will host the first pan-European meeting of trade ministers focused on responding to the U.S. tariffs. The main goal of the meeting is to present “a unified message of willingness to negotiate with Washington on lifting the tariffs, but also readiness to respond with countermeasures if talks fail.”
