Canada has officially filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the 25% tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on imported cars and auto parts.
The request was submitted last Thursday, the same day the tariffs went into effect, but it was only made public among WTO members on Monday, as reported by AFP.
“Canada has asked the WTO to conduct consultations regarding U.S. measures that impose a 25% tariff on cars and auto parts from Canada,” the organization stated. In its request, the Canadian government argues that the tariffs “do not comply with the United States’ commitments” under international trade law.
The WTO consultations offer both parties the chance to discuss the issue and work toward a resolution without advancing to more formal procedures. This is not the first time Canada has filed complaints with the WTO regarding tariffs imposed by Trump’s administration.
