U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a sharp increase in tariffs on imports from China, raising the rate to 125% as an immediate measure amid the ongoing trade confrontation between the two nations. The announcement was made on his platform, Truth Social.
According to Trump, the decision was made in response to what he described as China’s “disrespect” for global market rules.
At some point – hopefully soon – China will realize that the era of robbing the U.S. and other countries with impunity is over, he stated.
Initially, Trump imposed a 54% tariff on all Chinese imports — the highest level among all U.S. foreign trade partners. In retaliation, Beijing announced it would impose 34% tariffs on all U.S. goods starting April 10. This move angered Trump, who then vowed to introduce an additional 50% in tariffs unless China reversed its latest actions.
As a result, China raised its tariffs on American goods to 84%. According to surveys, over 70% of Americans expect prices for everyday goods to rise due to the unprecedented tariffs introduced by President Trump.
