Deadly thunderstorms claim lives in India and Nepal amid severe weather

Dozens of people have died as a result of unusually strong thunderstorms and rainstorms in India and Nepal.

At least 61 people lost their lives due to the powerful weather conditions on April 10 and 11, according to the Disaster Management Office of Bihar, an eastern state in India. Additionally, eight fatalities were reported in neighboring Nepal, as confirmed by the Emergency Management Office to AFP.

The majority of the deaths were caused by lightning strikes, with the region bracing for continued heavy rains and thunderstorms in the days ahead.

Experts suggest that climate change is contributing to the growing frequency of fatal lightning strikes in India, where nearly 1,900 people die annually from such incidents, making it the deadliest country for lightning strikes in the world.
