EU Council overhauls arms export rules to strengthen control and transparency

The EU Council announced on Monday that it has completed a review of its arms export control system, with changes now officially adopted. The Council’s press service confirmed this update.

The revisions to the EU’s position include new guidelines for controlling the export of military technologies and equipment, as well as approved conclusions on the subject.

The updated conclusions emphasize the EU’s commitment to ensuring a responsible and transparent arms trade, aiming to prevent weapons from being diverted for misuse by terrorists, criminals, and other unauthorized parties.

Additionally, the conclusions outline the agenda for the Council’s efforts in the coming years to promote responsible trade in military technologies and equipment. As part of this review, new user guidance for licensing officers in member states has been adopted.

The review was prompted by ongoing arms supplies to Ukraine and the necessity of facilitating the export of military equipment developed collaboratively by EU member states.
