Germany plans to limit the number of asylum seekers to 100 thousand per year

The likely future Chancellor of Germany and leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz, announced the intention of the new coalition to set a clear limit on the number of individuals who can seek asylum in the country. This was reported by Die Zeit.

According to Merz, the government plans to accept no more than 100,000 potential asylum seekers annually. This measure, he explained, is in response to the excessive strain on municipalities, schools, hospitals, and infrastructure.

The incoming German government also intends to suspend repatriation and family reunification programs outlined in the current coalition agreement. Additionally, Merz stated that the government would push for the refusal of entry to asylum seekers at the border.

The conservative CDU/CSU coalition, along with the Social Democrats who won the early elections on April 9, have already reached an agreement on forming a new government. One of the key focuses of the new policy will be strengthening migration control.

The government also plans to maintain enhanced border controls, expedite the deportation of illegal migrants, and expand the list of countries whose citizens will not be eligible for asylum in Germany.
