According to a report published by The New York Times, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump plans to strip National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) of $1.1 billion in funding.
In his statement, Trump accused these organizations of bias and urged Congress to immediately cease their financial support. The proposal, which could be included in a broader package of measures aimed at cutting federal funding, concerns the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), an organization funded by taxpayers to support public media in the U.S. Although federal funding represents only a small portion of NPR and PBS’s budgets, these organizations also generate significant revenue through sponsorships and donations.
This proposal is part of broader efforts by the Trump administration to reduce the federal budget and decrease the number of employees in several government agencies, including the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM), which oversees organizations such as Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and Voice of America.
However, despite the proposed cuts, a federal judge temporarily blocked the cessation of funding for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
