EU urges Kosovo to form government as soon as possible

The European Union has stated that Kosovo must form a new government as soon as possible amid the political crisis that has persisted in the partially recognized country for the past two months following parliamentary elections.

This was mentioned in a comment from the EU representation in Kosovo to the Balkan service of Radio Free Europe.

The representation noted that the EU is closely monitoring the developments around the formation of Kosovo’s government and hopes that the process will be completed soon.

“Quick formation of the government is crucial for advancing important reforms across all sectors that will improve the quality and living conditions for the people of Kosovo,” they added. The EU representation stated that Brussels is ready to work closely with the new Kosovo government once it is formed and to continue supporting Kosovo’s path towards European integration.

This week, Kosovo failed twice to establish the new parliament due to procedural disputes between the political parties that won seats in the February 9 elections.

The left-wing party of the current head of government, Albin Kurti’s Self-Determination Movement (Vetevendosje!), secured 48 out of 120 seats in parliament, failing to gain the majority needed to form a cabinet independently.

In this context, three opposition parties—the Democratic Party of Kosovo, the Democratic League of Kosovo, and the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo—insist that government members who were elected as deputies should resign from their mandates.

They say that otherwise, they will not vote on the report to verify the mandates of the deputies, which is a necessary step to continue the process of forming the new government.
