Four people killed in cable car accident in Italy

A tragedy occurred in Italy near Naples on Thursday, April 17, when the supporting cable of a cable car on Mount Faito, located about 45 km southeast of the city, snapped, causing the cabin to fall. As a result of the incident, four people were killed, and one person sustained serious injuries.

According to information provided by mountain rescue services and firefighters, among the deceased were the cable car operator and three tourists, two of whom were British citizens, and one was Israeli. The second Israeli, who was injured, was hospitalized in a Naples hospital in stable but serious condition.

Umberto De Gregorio, head of the EAV company that operates the cable car, expressed his condolences, calling the incident an “unthinkable and unpredictable tragedy.” He also noted that the cable car had just opened for the spring-summer season ten days ago.

This accident is not the first tragedy involving cable cars in recent years. In 2021, a similar incident in northern Italy resulted in the deaths of 14 out of 15 passengers. In 2024, a cable car accident in Antalya, Turkey, caused the death of one person and injuries to ten others. Authorities have already begun an investigation into the causes of the tragedy.
