Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that U.S. President Donald Trump has agreed to make an official visit to Rome and is considering the possibility of meeting with representatives of the European Union during the trip.
Meloni’s visit to Washington took place against the backdrop of a trade dispute between the U.S. and the EU and was seen as an effort to promote dialogue, especially following Washington’s decision to temporarily suspend most tariffs for 90 days.
Ahead of her trip to the U.S., Meloni held a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
The Italian prime minister continues to balance her close personal relationship with Trump and the need to maintain strong ties with European allies, who have criticized the tariff hikes and the exclusion of the EU from peace negotiations with Russia.
