Viktor Orbán: Ukraine’s accession to EU is carte blanche for endless war

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has sharply criticized the idea of Ukraine’s expedited accession to the European Union.

In a statement posted on his X social media page, he described the move as a “blank check for endless war.” According to Orbán, the push to admit Ukraine into the EU comes from Brussels, not Budapest.

They expect European taxpayers to finance a million-strong army for decades. This is not a path to peace — it’s a path to perpetual conflict, he stated.

The Hungarian leader emphasized that, in its current state, Ukraine does not meet the basic criteria for EU membership. In his view, the country lacks clearly defined borders, full sovereignty, and a functioning economy.

Previously, Orbán claimed that the West had lost its proxy war in Ukraine — a reality he believes is becoming increasingly apparent to the global community. He also expressed confidence that former U.S. President Donald Trump is trying to save the United States from what he called a “serious defeat.”
