In the heart of the Vatican, the coffin bearing the body of Pope Francis has been moved to St. Peter’s Basilica, where the public is now able to pay their final respects.
The farewell ceremony began on the morning of April 23 at the Domus Sanctae Marthae, where the Pope’s coffin had initially been placed following his passing. The gathering included cardinals, Vatican personnel, and several dignitaries, among them Italian President Sergio Mattarella. The coffin was transported from the chapel to the basilica in an open casket, greeted by applause from those gathered in St. Peter’s Square.
Honoring the late pontiff’s wishes, the coffin was placed directly on a low platform on the floor of the basilica, rather than on the traditional raised catafalque. From 11 a.m. onwards, mourners were invited to approach and say their goodbyes.
Pope Francis passed away on April 21 at 7:35 a.m. in his Vatican residence. He was 88 years old. Officials reported the cause of death as a stroke.
The funeral is set to take place on Saturday, April 26. A number of international leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, have confirmed plans to attend the ceremony in person.
