Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between the European Union and China, amid escalating tensions between Washington and Beijing. He argued that Europe must position itself as a key player in the evolving global order.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Cuerpo noted that the EU’s relationship with China is undergoing a “reboot.”
“China is a rival and competitor in many areas, but it must also be an ally and a strategic partner in the future. Spain is part of this process, but it is a pan-European approach,” he said. The minister stressed that the EU needs to align with major global economic players, with China being a central figure in this strategy.
“Trade relations will remain regardless of political cycles,” Cuerpo added, expressing confidence in continued economic exchanges.
He also commented on the ongoing negotiations between the U.S. and the EU on tariffs, stating that they are still in the early stages and are working to understand the exact demands and find a fair resolution.
