U.S. considers lifting sanctions against Nord Stream-2 as part of Ukrainian peace talks

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly discussing the possibility of lifting sanctions imposed on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, as well as other Russian assets in Europe, according to Politico, citing sources.

According to the publication, the initiative is being led by the president’s special representative, Steven Witkoff. He reportedly stated that he has developed a friendly relationship with Vladimir Putin and has instructed his team to compile a list of all U.S. energy sanctions against Russia. Witkoff proposed reviewing the possibility of lifting these sanctions, although the idea has so far gained little traction within the administration. Moreover, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, according to sources, has opposed the initiative and attempted to block it.

Meanwhile, both Witkoff and Rubio have publicly denied any negotiations regarding the lifting of sanctions as part of a peace agreement with Ukraine. They described Politico’s report as “completely fabricated” and “irresponsible,” calling the outlet itself a “third-rate publication.”
