France detains about 20 suspects in prison attacks

On the morning of Monday, April 28, French law enforcement arrested around 20 individuals suspected of being involved in a series of attacks on prisons and prison staff. This was reported by RTL.

The arrests took place in Paris, Marseille, Bordeaux, and Lyon. The investigation is considering the possibility that drug traffickers, particularly members of the influential Marseille-based DZ mafia, may be behind the attacks.

According to sources close to the investigation, this could be a new phenomenon—”drug terrorism”—aimed at intimidation and destabilization.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin thanked the police for their work, stating on social media platform X: “The law and the Republic remain strong in our relentless fight against drug trafficking.”

On April 15, news broke of a series of attacks on French prisons and the arson of staff vehicles in several cities across the country. Since then, similar incidents have continued.

Earlier, Justice Minister Bruno Retailleau suggested that drug cartels may be responsible for the attacks.
